Essam initiates a hunger strike in protest of poor prison conditions

Essam initiated a hunger strike in November of 2017 as a form of protest. He wanted the following basic demands met:

1. weekly one hour long family visits with no glass barriers;
2. improving the quantity and quality of the food;
3. allowing packages into the prison;
4. allowing the inmates to go outside everyday.
