Dr Essam and Gehad Witness President Mohamed Morsi Collapse in the Courtroom
Over the span of the past few days, President Mohamed Morsi, Dr Essam El-Haddad, and Gehad El-Haddad along with other political detainees have been brought to the courthouse for ongoing trial hearings.
The detainees are brought into the courtroom from 7am in the morning till late in the evening. They are denied food, water and are not allowed to bring medication. The are forced to sit on the floor in court prison cells and courtroom glass cages. Dr Essam requested that the sessions be delayed as they were all exhausted given the harsh conditions they are being subjected to, but his request was ignored.
Today Dr Essam and Gehad were brought to the courthouse with President Morsi. The hearing was dedicated to President Morsi’s defense. His lawyer, who has never met with the President, presented his defence, and then President Morsi was given a chance to speak. After speaking for 5 minutes he collapsed to the floor. Other detainees immediately started screaming for medical attention. President Morsi was pronounced dead when medical assistance arrived.
President Morsi was suffering from serious medical problems that developed from the horrific conditions he has been subjected to. In the past he has asked the judge for medical attention but his requests were denied. International groups are calling for an independent investigation.
“My deepest condolences and prayers go out to President Morsi’s family and the Egyptian people who democratically elected him. It is a sad day for Egypt.
My father and brother were in the same courtroom. I fear for them the same fate. Both have been held in solitary confinement for 6 years. My father has suffered 4 heart attacks and he urgently needs medical attention. My brother Gehad was detained and tortured. There are many others who are on the verge of death, and unless the international community speaks out and demands for others to be released, many more will die, including my own father and brother.”
-Abdullah Haddad (son of Dr Essam Haddad)
The family and #FreeHaddad campaign continues to fight for Dr Essam and Gehad’s freedom, and callson the international community for its support.
