20 November 2017

Dr. Essam El-Haddad, assistant to President Morsi for foreign affairs, appeared before court in his trial yesterday. Seven days since his hunger strike, he was very weak, fading from time to time and could not speak or walk. With the help of two inmates, he was carried on a chair by his son Gehad – also imprisoned in the same notorious Scorpion prison and under trial in the same case. When they reached the sound-proof glass cage they laid him on a ground.

Gehad – using signs- told his family who was attending the session that El-Haddad blood sugar level was 41 mg/dL just before leaving prison, far below the least normal blood sugar level when fasting which is 72 mg/dL.

After four years in solitary imprisonment, El-Haddad, 64, developed an ischemic heart disease, inguinal hernia, prostatic enlargement, rheumatoid arthritis and hypertension beside knees and back pain. He has been denied proper medical care since his imprisonment. Two of his inmates died before his eyes due to medical negligence and extremely inhumane prison conditions.

Due to his condition, a doctor was called by court to examine Essam vital signs. According to court, his blood sugar was 50 mg/dL but El-Haddad refused to take glucose solutions.

Gehad expressed his father’s wish to speak to court. He explained that his father had 4 heart attacks and is currently suffering from serious heart condition. The prison refused to let him see a cardiologist since his first heart attack a year ago, despite a court order in the previous session.

Dr. El-Haddad could not stand to reach the microphone inside the sound-proof glass cage. The judge refused to bring him another mike or to let him speak outside the cage. He promised that he would let El-Haddad speak at the end of session if he agreed to take glucose solutions.

After accepting solutions, the judge refused to let El-Haddad speak despite repeated demands from inmates and lawyers. Moreover, he read El-Haddad’s medical measurements after taking the solution claiming blood sugar reached 310, a number far beyond the highest blood sugar level in normal people after meals which is 140!

Furthermore, El-Haddad's wife was summoned by security officers during the session. She was denied the right to attend the rest of the session with no reason.

El-Haddad has been denied proper food, clean water and daily recess time outside his cell. He sleeps on the cold floor without mattresses or covers. Basic personal belongings are also denied including medications, clothes, books, paper and pen.

Stop torture, provide basic health conditions in prison, and treatment from his heart disease are the three reasons for El-Haddad’s strike. He demands to be considered a human, no more.

Essam EL-Haddad starts a hunger strike

15th November 2017

Dr. Essam El-Haddad, 64 years old, has started a full hunger strike at Scorpion prison since Monday, 13th November 2017. EL-Haddad has been held in a 4 square meter airtight underground solitary confinement cell, with no windows and only a slit in the door, for more than 4 years. He is allowed to walk out of his cell only one hour every day but just in an inner corridor. He was deprived, as well as his colleagues, from going out in the sun since last February (10 months). He does not have any bed or mattresses and has to sleep on the floor since last February as well.

EL-Haddad suffered from a chest pain on 15th October 2016 and was only allowed after 11 months, on 25th September 2017, to do medical perfusion imaging for diagnosis. His medical report states that he suffers from moderate ischemia of the left side of the heart and ventricular hypertrophy and coronary artery deficiency nourishing the left side of his heart. EL-Haddad asked to be examined by a cardiologist but his request was refused.

EL-Haddad’s family consulted a cardiologist from Al Kasr Al Ainy, where EL-Haddad had his myocardial perfusion imaging on 25th September 2017, for diagnosis according to his medical report and were told that he urgently needs a cardiac catheterization operation and an installation of a stent in his affected coronary artery. His family tried few days ago to send some drugs suitable for his case but the prison authorities refused. EL-Haddad needs urgently to change the drugs he is taking because some of his previous drugs are dangerous for his case.

Despite recognising his critical case, prison authorities had left him more than 11 months since his heart attack without giving him any medical assistance, referring him to a cardiologist or allowing him to receive medications from his family.

The conditions in EL-Haddad’s cell are extremely dangerous for his case. It is well known that angina can be easily precipitated by cold and stress conditions which he suffers most in his solitary cell. He is forced to eat prison food which is considered too poor to eat. No fresh food, fruit, vegetables, milk and honey are allowed. As a result of this very unhealthy diet along with forbidding him from buying any food from the prison’s cafeteria, EL-Haddad lost 15 kilograms (33 pounds) of his weight.

EL-Haddad already has a strong family history of heart diseases and cerebral haemorrhagic stroke that previously caused the death of his father and affected his elder brother. Moreover, inside scorpion prison, there are no facilities for the diagnosis and treatment for such medical heart conditions.

EL-Haddad has long exceeded the provisional detention period and was never interrogated or even questioned by the prosecutor. During his 4 years of detention, he met with his lawyer for only 10 minutes in 2014.

The family of Essam EL-Haddad calls for an urgent action to save him.

Gehad El-Haddad

Gehad El-Haddad, son of Dr. Essam El-Haddad, enters a hunger strike. Reasons below.
#FreeG
#DyingToLive

The family of Gehad El-Haddad has confirmed that he entered an open-ended hunger strike

After languishing in utter isolation for two weeks in his solitary cell. Gehad, the spokesperson of the Muslim Brotherhood, began the strike on February 27th. Scorpion prison authorities locked Gehad in his cell, depriving him from food and medication since February 22, 2017 after the NYT ran his op-ed titled “I Am a Member of the Muslim Brotherhood, Not a Terrorist”. Prison officials also closed shut the only slot in the cell’s door with a metal cover attached from outside. Shouting through this slot is the only way inmates in solitary cells communicate with each other and call for help when needed. Gehad was completely locked down with no recess time outside the cell and none of his inmates could check on his well-being.
Gehad was also prevented from buying food or drinking water from prison canteen. He was forced to eat the prison food and water that has caused several poisoning incidents among inmates before. In addition, Scorpion cells are designed so that no direct sunlight or sufficient airflow would enter them.
During his custody Gehad developed severe anemia and lost 35 kilograms of his weight due to malnutrition. Prison officials raided and emptied Gehad’s and other prisoners’ cells on Saturday February 26, 2017. They took everything including medicines, clothes and empty plastic bottles. In response Gehad started a hunger strike the following day February 27.
Gehad's family has been banned from visiting him since September 2016. The family holds the Interior Ministry, prison authorities and the National Human Rights Council, where the family has filed several complaints on his condition, responsible for his life and well-being.
